A Case of Diabetic Ketoacidosis Precipitated by Thyrotoxicosis

Abstract

|
It is rare, but thyrotoxicosis may precipitate diabetic ketoacidosis. Cases of the simultaneous presentation of thyrotoxicosis and diabetic ketoacidosis have been reported and a delayed diagnosis result in serious complications such as cardiac arrest or death. Thyroid hormone has been well-documented in patients with glucose intolerance and thyroid hormone’s lipolytic effects on adipocytes may promote hepatic beta-oxidation. We report here on a case of diabetic ketoacidosis that was precipitated by thyrotoxicosis in a woman with type 1 diabetes mellitus. We propose that thyrotoxicosis is a significant contributor to the development of diabetic ketoacidosis.
